Continue ShoppingAs a 10-year anniversary special article, Garbags went to interview Tânia, our CEO and believer about this amazing journey to make the world better.
How did your six month trip to India, help you form the idea of Garbags?
"At that time was recently graduated in environmental engineering, and when I got to India and I saw all the pollution, it made me feel grateful that actually, I could choose. I didn't have to stay there. But at the same time, I knew I had to do something. And I knew my job had to have an impact in this field. I didn't know what at the time, but I knew it.
It was after a trip to South East Asia that I actually took the decision to start Garbags as a business."
Why are packages a priority in making the products?
"I think packages is what we all have in common. We all produce packages in our daily life, plastic packages for everything. For me, that is the big problem. It's this daily life plastic that we actually throw in garbage, like a banana skin or something. And they're not banana skin, so they're very strong packages. They're waterproof, they have a lot of colors and I think we should do something with them. So why not bags?"
Tânia, how do you define success?
"Success for me is to wake up every day happy to go to work, know that my money comes from actually an activity that is good for the planet, and that I can embrace people in my system. So, you know, to create a machine that is good for the world."
What was the biggest lesson Garbags thaught you?
"If you have a business, you're learning every day. I would say the biggest lesson, specifically from Garbags, is that the way you do business matters. The decisions you take every day, they do matter."
Finally, do you have any advice for someone who wants to start an unconventional business?
"Actually, if you want to start an commissional business, you need to be a little bit out of the box - already. But definitely you need to learn how to deal with failure, because eventually you will fail in the path to success. So you really need to learn how to deal with it, how to learn from it, and to keep forward. Also learn how to take care of yourself because it really matters who you are, not where you are, what you're doing, but who you are."
